Burj Dubai to open on December 2

DUBAI: The world's tallest tower Burj Dubai will open this year on December 2, which is the UAE National Day. Mohammed Al-Abbar, Chairman of Emaar Properties, which is the developer of the project, said he was "shooting for UAE National Day". Al-Abbar also said on CNN that "12,000 staff were working inside trying to get the building ready".
Emaar announced early this month that the exterior cladding of the Burj Dubai is now complete.
The building, which currently measures over 800 metres, has accomplished a new world record for the highest installation of an aluminium and glass facade, Emaar Properties had said in a statement.
A total of 24,348 pieces of cladding were fitted to the tower since May 2007. The developer also said the experience of being at the top of the tower will include travelling by lift at a speed of 10 metres per second to the observatory deck on the level 124, which will take about 60 seconds.
The total glass used in the building can cover 14 standard football pitches. The total length of stainless steel used is equivalent to the area of 34 NBA basketball courts.
The total length of the gaskets if laid end-to-end is equivalent to the distance from Dubai to Damascus. A total of 2,074 truck deliveries were undertaken to take the panels from the factory to the Burj Dubai site - the distance is equal going round the earth once, or trekking the Great Wall of China six times.

Accor Hospitality Middle East and Action Hotels to launch first ibis hotel in Jordan

Accor Hospitality Middle East and Kuwait-based Action Hotels, a subsidiary of Action Group Holdings, today announced that Jordan’s first ibis hotel will be launched to the public in September 2009. The ibis Amman, the first internationally branded economy hotel in Jordan, is set to be a significant addition to Jordan’s booming travel and tourism industry.

Conveniently located in the Tila’ Al Ali district, a 30 minute drive from Queen Alia International Airport, the ibis Amman is situated minutes away from the heart of the capital’s prime commercial and leisure areas, and is exactly opposite Amman Mall.

"Action Hotels is proud to have successfully completed our first hotel project in Amman and to be one of the first Kuwaiti companies to invest in hospitality in Jordan. This is the latest in our growing portfolio of ibis hotels we are developing in the Middle East as we focus on developing affordable, quality properties in the best locations managed by international operators of global repute. ibis is today the best economy brand in the world. I would summarize it as simplicity, consistency and great value - It is really about everything you want at a reasonable cost. As a business we also believe that hotels play an important role to the local economy and that is very important to us at Action Hotels,” said Sheikh Mubarak A.M. Al-Sabah, Vice Chairman of Action Group Holdings and Chairman of Action Hotels Company.

ibis Amman features a choice of accommodation: 158 double and single rooms, 45 connecting rooms, in addition to two special needs rooms and three non-smoking floors. The three-star hotel is committed to the ’15 minutes satisfaction contract’ which is an illustration of ibis’ concrete commitment to quality. If a customer reports a problem which is the hotel’s responsibility, the teams are committed to finding a solution within 15 minutes maximum, 24 hours a day, every day of the week. If no solution is found, the client is invited to stay for free.

“We are proud to soon open Jordan’s first Accor hotel - ibis Amman – which will drive our strategic presence in the commercial centre of Jordan. We are aggressively positioning ibis to match Amman’s ambitious target to be a major hub for business, leisure and tourism,” said Christophe Landais, Managing Director, Accor Hospitality Middle East.

“Entering Jordan’s lucrative market is part of our regional strategy to cement our leading position in the economy hotel segment. The current economic climate has substantially driven demand for economy hotels and the launch of the ibis Amman will fulfil the gap in the market for business and leisure travellers who want quality service at value for money prices,” added Landais.

Action Hotels focuses on developing three and four star hotels supported by its strategic alliance with the France-based Accor Group. The company is actively extending its network across the Middle East region.

SriLankan Airlines passengers transiting Colombo now have the opportunity of enjoying a mini-vacation basking on island’s famed golden beach

SriLankan Airlines passengers transiting Colombo now have the opportunity of enjoying a mini-vacation basking on one of the island’s famed golden beaches, with the airline extending its hotel accommodation service for transit passengers for up to 48 hours for a nominal fee.

General Manager SriLankan Holidays, Amith Sumanapala, said: “SriLankan Airlines would like even our transit passengers to enjoy the wide range of amazing attractions on our island of Paradise. The extension of our Connecting Point Service hotel accommodation programme gives passengers transiting for up to 48 hours the opportunity to relax at a beach resort and enjoy the legendary hospitality and friendliness of Sri Lankan culture.”

SriLankan already provides complimentary accommodation for passengers in transit for between 8 and 24 hours. And now, passengers whose transit times range between 24-48 hours will be provided hotel accommodation and airport transfers at the nominal rate of USD 10 per person, yet another value added service by Sri Lanka’s award-winning airline for its customers. This service is also for passengers who choose not to take the first available connecting flight.

Nearly 40% of SriLankan’s passengers are those in transit to other destinations. The airline is projecting Sri Lanka as a hub between Europe and the Middle East in the West, and Southeast Asia and the Far East in the East. SriLankan also has convenient connections to eight cities in the Subcontinent (India, Pakistan and the Maldives).

At Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport, passengers are whisked away to their hotels in air-conditioned vehicles. Passengers can choose from no less than a dozen hotels of various types within half an hour’s travel of the airport, including those in the seaside resort town of Negombo, and the nearby beach area.

Passengers can spend their time on the beach; explore the vibrant nightlife among the pubs, restaurants and boutiques of Negombo’s hotel road; or even take a quick trip down to Colombo, just one hours’ drive away, to enjoy the city’s nightlife and great value for money shopping for items such as Brand clothing, Ceylon Tea, handicrafts and Precious stones.

When the time comes for their onward flights, passengers are picked up at their hotels by the airline and brought back to the airport well in time. While they wait, they can enjoy the conveniences of one of the finest airports in the region, with its modern aerobridges and South Asia’s best-stocked duty free shopping complex.

Passengers who wish to obtain this service can request it when booking their air tickets, and the cost will be added to their fare.
